Lovlina Borgohain delivered a memorable birthday present by winning her maiden Asian Games boxing gold medal. The Indian boxer defeated China’s Ziyi Bao unanimously in the women’s 75kg final on Friday. She secured the victory with a commanding 5-0 verdict from the judges at Nishio Gymnasium. The triumph ended India’s 12-year wait for another women’s Asian Games boxing champion. Mary Kom last achieved the feat when she won gold at the 2014 Asian Games. Lovlina therefore became only the second Indian woman boxer to win Asian Games gold. The 29-year-old entered the final after reaching consecutive Asian Games finals for the first time. She had previously won silver at the Hangzhou Asian Games and wanted to improve. Lovlina maintained composure throughout the contest and controlled crucial moments against her Chinese opponent. Her birthday victory also added another major achievement to an already distinguished international boxing career.

Lovlina Controls Final to Secure Historic Gold
Lovlina entered the final with confidence after defeating Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova in their semifinal. She won that closely fought bout 3-2 and secured another Asian Games final appearance. The result made her the first Indian woman boxer to reach consecutive Asian Games finals. Lovlina had settled for silver in Hangzhou after losing the previous final. That experience strengthened her determination to change the medal colour in Aichi-Nagoya. She also carried strong international experience into the title fight against Bao. The Chinese boxer arrived with an impressive amateur record and a 14-fight winning streak. Bao had also won the women’s 75kg gold at the Asian Boxing Elite Championships. Lovlina needed patience, accuracy and defensive discipline against the aggressive Chinese challenger. She combined those qualities effectively and gradually established control as the contest progressed. Her preparation helped her manage Bao’s quick attacks and maintain composure throughout the championship bout.
Lovlina started the opening round positively and immediately used her height and reach advantage. She landed clean punches before attempting to close the distance through clinches. Bao responded with strong body shots and gradually increased pressure during the opening exchanges. The Chinese boxer moved closer and forced Lovlina to defend against several combinations. Despite the pressure, Lovlina finished the round strongly and impressed enough judges. Three judges awarded the opening round to the Indian boxer by a 3-2 margin. Bao returned with greater aggression during the second round and increased her punching volume. Lovlina relied on jabs and hooks while carefully managing Bao’s forward movement. The Chinese boxer briefly pushed Lovlina toward the ropes with a well-timed jab. Lovlina answered with late punches and convinced four judges to award her second round. Her tactical discipline allowed her to absorb pressure without losing control of the contest.

From Hangzhou Silver to Asian Games Glory
Lovlina entered the final round with an advantage and focused on controlling the remaining minutes. She reduced unnecessary exchanges and used her defence to frustrate Bao’s attacking intentions. Bao became increasingly desperate and attempted stronger punches as the clock continued to run. Lovlina absorbed the pressure while protecting her lead through movement and disciplined defence. The judges ultimately awarded her another 4-1 round, completing a 5-0 unanimous victory. The Indian corner celebrated immediately as Lovlina realised she had secured the coveted gold medal. Her performance showed composure, tactical awareness and consistency during a demanding three-round championship fight. The victory also upgraded her previous Asian Games silver into the gold medal. Lovlina now joins Mary Kom as the only Indian women boxers with Asian Games gold. Her achievement also strengthens India’s medal campaign in boxing at the 2026 Games. She trusted her preparation and refused to surrender control during the closing stages.
Lovlina’s gold medal also completed an important redemption story after her previous Asian Games experience. She had entered the 2026 competition determined to correct mistakes from earlier major tournaments. After losing the Hangzhou final, she studied her weaknesses and worked on improving consistency. She also faced setbacks before the Asian Games but continued developing her overall boxing approach. Her semifinal victory over Bogdanova showed her ability to manage pressure during difficult contests. The final then demonstrated how effectively she could execute her tactical plans against Bao. Lovlina’s journey now includes an Olympic bronze, world championship success and an Asian Games gold. Her latest achievement adds another major title to a career built through persistence. The birthday triumph will remain one of the most memorable moments of her sporting journey. India will remember October 2, 2026, as the day Lovlina turned determination into Asian Games gold. Her disciplined preparation finally produced the result she had targeted throughout the tournament.
