India’s Jaishankar Issues Firm Terror Warning to Poland

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday urged Poland to adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism and cautioned it against contributing in any way to terror infrastructure in India’s neighbourhood. He conveyed the blunt message during talks with Polish Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski in New Delhi, apparently in response to the mention of Kashmir in a Poland-Pakistan joint statement issued last October.

During his televised opening remarks, Jaishankar also expressed strong displeasure over what he described as the unfair and unjustified selective targeting of India over the Ukraine conflict. He indirectly referred to criticism by Western nations over India’s energy ties with Russia.

“You are familiar with the longstanding challenge of cross-border terrorism in our region,” Jaishankar said, adding that Poland should not take positions that could fuel terrorist infrastructure near India.

Sikorski, who is on a three-day visit to India ahead of a high-level European Union delegation’s arrival, agreed with Jaishankar’s assessment. He acknowledged the unfairness of selective targeting, particularly in the context of tariffs and India’s relations with Russia.

Jaishankar also reiterated India’s consistent stance on the Ukraine conflict, stating that he had candidly shared New Delhi’s views with Poland on multiple occasions, including meetings in New York and Paris. He said India would continue to oppose selective criticism.

The external affairs minister highlighted the steady growth in India-Poland relations, noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Poland in August 2024 elevated bilateral ties to a strategic partnership.

Both leaders discussed expanding cooperation in trade, investment, defence and security, clean energy, and digital innovation. Jaishankar said Poland ranks among India’s largest trading partners in Central Europe, with bilateral trade reaching USD 7 billion—nearly tripling over the past decade. Indian investments in Poland have crossed USD 3 billion, generating significant employment.

Jaishankar also recalled the historic humanitarian gesture of Maharaja Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja of Nawanagar, fondly remembered in Poland as the “Dobry Maharaja” for sheltering Polish children during World War II, calling it a cherished symbol of people-to-people ties.
