Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is traveling to Washington this week to press U.S. President Donald Trump to widen the scope of ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran. Israel wants the talks to go beyond uranium enrichment and include strict limits on Iran’s ballistic missile program and its support for regional militant groups.

The renewed negotiations resumed last week alongside a visible buildup of American military forces in the Middle East. Netanyahu’s visit comes at a critical moment, as U.S. officials recently held indirect talks with Iran in Oman. Israel fears Washington could settle for a narrow agreement that temporarily freezes Iran’s nuclear activities without addressing long-term security threats.
Israeli officials believe such a limited deal would only delay future conflict. Analysts say Israel worries it may eventually be forced to launch new military strikes if Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities remain intact. Last year’s joint U.S.-Israel strikes damaged key Iranian military and nuclear sites, but the full impact remains unclear.
International inspectors have yet to access the affected facilities, even as satellite images suggest ongoing activity. With Israeli elections approaching later this year, Netanyahu is also seeking to reinforce his image as a leader with direct influence in Washington.
