India welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, expressing hope that this development would enable a “safe and sustained delivery of humanitarian aid” to the people of Gaza, where the 15-month-long conflict has claimed over 40,000 Palestinian lives.
India Welcomes Ceasefire and Hostage Release Agreement in Gaza
The Ministry of External Affairs stated, “We welcome the announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza and the agreement for the release of hostages. We hope this paves the way for a safe and continuous flow of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. India has consistently advocated for the release of all hostages, a ceasefire, and a return to dialogue and diplomacy.”
The United States and Qatar revealed the agreement following months of negotiations facilitated by Egyptian and Qatari mediators with support from the US.

This development comes just days before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, who has repeatedly warned Hamas of severe consequences if the hostages are not freed before he assumes office on January 20.
The ceasefire is set to begin on January 19 in three stages.
Key Points of the Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Agreement
The plan outlines a six-week truce, the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the phased exchange of hostages held in Gaza for Palestinian prisoners detained in Israel.
In the initial stage, a six-week ceasefire will be implemente, during which Hamas will release 33 Israeli hostages, including all women, children, and men over the age of 50.
In return, Israel will release Palestinian prisoners.
