Islamabad has heightened its alert level to “extremely” high following Pakistan’s airstrike on separatist militants inside Iran on Thursday. This retaliatory action occurred two days after Tehran claimed to have targeted bases of a different group within Pakistani territory.

Amid escalating tensions between the neighbours, a top Pakistani security source, as reported by news agency Reuters said anymore “misadventure” from the Iranian side will be met forcefully.

Pakistan carried out airstrikes within Iran, specifically targeting Baloch separatist militants, as confirmed by the Pakistani foreign ministry.
The strikes in the volatile Sistan-Balochistan province resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals, with most of them reported as women or children, according to Iran’s official IRNA news agency.

The international community, represented by the United Nations and the United States, has called for prudence in the aftermath of deadly airstrikes conducted by Iran and Pakistan on each other’s territories. UN Chief Antonio Guterres has appealed to both governments, urging them to “exercise maximum restraint.”

The conflict between the heavily armed neighboring countries has intensified existing tensions, which were already heightened by the Israel-Hamas war.
Pakistan’s airstrikes were a response to Iran’s raids on what it termed as “terrorist” targets in Pakistan on Tuesday, resulting in the death of at least two children.
Iran and nuclear-armed Pakistan frequently level accusations against each other, alleging the harboring of militants on their respective territories. Nevertheless, instances of cross-border operations by government forces have been infrequent.
China has extended an offer to mediate between the neighboring countries, both of which are significant economic partners for Beijing.
India provided an official response stating that the situation is a matter between Iran and Pakistan. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized India’s unwavering stance of zero tolerance towards terrorism and acknowledged the actions that countries may take in self-defense.
Pakistan’s foreign ministry characterized Thursday’s airstrikes as a “sequence of well-coordinated and precisely targeted military operations against terrorist hideouts” in Sistan-Balochistan.
