Dubai’s historic spice and dry fruit markets, known for trading saffron, nuts, dates, and spices, have started feeling the impact of the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have disrupted normal trade activity across the region. Traders say that key supply routes from Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan have been affected due to instability and logistical disruptions.
To understand the situation, NDTV visited Dubai’s well-known Deira Spice Souk, an important trading hub for spices and dry fruits in the region. The market usually attracts thousands of buyers every day. However, traders say that activity has slowed significantly in recent days due to the tensions.
Imran, a shopkeeper who runs a dry fruit store in the market, described the situation as extremely challenging. He said that sales have dropped sharply and the market now feels unusually quiet. According to him, the conflict has disrupted trade routes and slowed shipments.

Iran Conflict Slows Dry Fruit Supplies to Dubai
Imran also pointed out that many traders in Dubai depend heavily on imports from Iran for a variety of dry fruits and nuts. Due to the ongoing conflict, those supplies have slowed considerably. This disruption has created shortages and uncertainty for wholesalers who rely on regular shipments to keep their businesses running smoothly. As a result, many traders fear that if the situation continues, the market could face longer-term supply challenges.
Another shopkeeper, Asif from Pakistan, shared similar concerns. He said the market currently feels almost as quiet as it did during the Covid period. The number of customers has dropped sharply, which has significantly affected daily sales.
Experts say the conflict involving Iran could also disrupt the global economy. Rising tensions are pushing up energy and fertilizer prices and increasing inflation concerns. Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said his country would continue fighting as long as necessary, casting doubt on hopes for a quick end to the conflict.
