Iran maintains strategic engagement with India amid its US-Israel relations

Despite India’s growing strategic partnerships with the United States and Israel, Iran continues to maintain a measured and pragmatic relationship with New Delhi. Tehran values its long-standing ties with India, which rest on energy cooperation, trade interests and a shared interest in regional balance. In recent days, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a detailed phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, during which both sides discussed the evolving situation in West Asia and agreed to remain in contact.

The conversation marked the third discussion between the two leaders since tensions escalated in the region and the first since Mojtaba Khamenei assumed leadership after the death of his father Ali Khamenei. Iran issued a strong statement condemning the United States and Israel but avoided criticising India directly, instead emphasising the importance of continuing bilateral engagement and consultations aimed at restoring regional stability.

Tehran values energy ties, strategic geography and diplomatic balance in its engagement with New Delhi

Tehran’s restrained tone reflects its broader strategy of keeping India within its diplomatic circle even as geopolitical tensions rise. Iran recognises India as a major energy market and an influential voice in international forums. While US sanctions have reduced India’s oil imports from Iran and slowed development of the Chabahar Port, Tehran has largely avoided public criticism and continues to express hope that cooperation on the project will progress.

The relationship between the two countries also draws strength from centuries of cultural and economic ties as well as modern diplomatic agreements. High-level visits by leaders such as Narendra Modi and former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani have further expanded cooperation in connectivity, trade and regional transit. By maintaining dialogue and emphasising stability, both nations continue to balance their interests while navigating the complex geopolitics of West Asia.
