The Indian Navy successfully foiled a piracy attempt on merchant vessel MV Golden Arsenal in the Gulf of Aden after responding to an emergency distress call. The vessel, carrying one Indian crew member among its crew, came under threat when suspected pirates attempted to board it while sailing through one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes. The crew acted quickly by following standard anti-piracy procedures, locking themselves inside the ship’s secure safe room (citadel) and immediately informing maritime authorities through an emergency communication channel. Their timely response helped prevent the pirates from gaining control of the vessel and allowed the Indian Navy to launch a rapid rescue operation.
Mission-deployed frontline warship INS Trikand immediately changed course and rushed toward the merchant vessel after receiving the distress alert. As the Indian Navy frigate closed in on the location, the suspected pirates abandoned their attempt and fled the area to avoid confrontation. Following the successful deterrence, elite Marine Commandos (MARCOS) boarded MV Golden Arsenal and carried out a detailed sanitisation and security inspection. The commandos thoroughly searched the ship to ensure no pirates or suspicious objects remained onboard before declaring the vessel completely safe for its crew to continue the voyage.

INS Trikand and MARCOS launch swift operation after distress call; Navy reaffirms commitment to securing merchant shipping in the Indian Ocean.
The Navy highlighted that the swift operation demonstrated India’s ability to respond rapidly to maritime security threats across the Indian Ocean Region. According to officials, the timely deployment of naval assets ensured the safety of the crew, prevented the hijacking of the merchant vessel, and protected international shipping lanes. The Gulf of Aden and the Western Indian Ocean remain vulnerable to piracy because thousands of commercial ships carrying essential goods pass through these waters every year. The Indian Navy has maintained a continuous presence in the region to escort merchant ships, deter piracy, and provide immediate assistance during emergencies.
This operation came shortly after another successful anti-piracy mission involving merchant vessel MV Fareeda 5. On June 17, the vessel reported a suspected piracy attempt while sailing in the Western Indian Ocean. INS Trikand, already deployed on a maritime security mission, responded immediately to the distress signal and investigated the suspicious activity. The warship’s rapid intervention discouraged the suspected pirates from carrying out an attack, allowing the merchant vessel to continue its journey without any harm to its crew or cargo.
MARCOS boarded MV Golden Arsenal after INS Trikand drove away suspected pirates during the rescue operation
In a statement posted on X, the Indian Navy said its prompt response to the distress call from MV Fareeda 5 ensured the safety of the merchant vessel and reinforced India’s role as a preferred security partner in the region. The Navy stated that it remains committed to safeguarding merchant shipping, countering piracy, responding to maritime emergencies, and ensuring safe and secure seas across the Indian Ocean Region. The statement also underlined the Navy’s continued deployment of frontline warships to protect international maritime trade and maintain regional stability.
The latest mission adds to a series of successful anti-piracy operations conducted by the Indian Navy in recent months. On May 27, INS Kolkata foiled another suspected piracy attempt near merchant vessel MV Mashallah 1 in the Western Indian Ocean. Acting on intelligence about possible pirate activity, the warship deployed its onboard helicopter and boarding teams to investigate the threat. The aggressive response forced the suspected pirates to retreat before they could attack the vessel, ensuring the safety of the ship, its crew, and its cargo.
India has significantly strengthened its maritime security operations over the past few years, especially in the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, and the Western Indian Ocean. Through continuous surveillance, rapid deployment of warships, aerial reconnaissance, and specialised MARCOS teams, the Indian Navy has emerged as one of the leading forces protecting global shipping routes. Its sustained anti-piracy missions continue to safeguard commercial vessels, reassure international shipping companies, and contribute to the security and stability of one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors.
