Indian Citizen Detained by Ukraine Amid Russia Conflict India Yet to Verify

A 22-year-old Indian man reportedly fighting for Russia was captured by Ukrainian forces recently. Indian officials have not yet confirmed the detention or the man’s identity as Majoti Sahil Mohamed Hussein. Sources from India’s Ministry of External Affairs said they are verifying the Ukrainian media reports before commenting. Hussein apparently hails from Morbi, Gujarat, and had traveled to Russia to pursue university studies. Ukrainian forces, specifically the 63rd Mechanised Brigade, recorded a video of his capture. In that video, Hussein admitted joining the Russian military to avoid prison. He claimed he signed a contract with Russian forces to escape drug-related charges. Indian authorities are monitoring the situation and seeking further details from Ukraine to clarify the circumstances.

Indian Student Enlisted in Russian Army Captured by Ukrainian Forces

The Kyiv Independent reported Hussein enlisted in the Russian army after arriving in Russia for education. Hussein explained in the video that Russian authorities imprisoned him on drug-related charges. To reduce his sentence, he accepted an offer to join the Russian military forces. He described the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a “special military operation.” After signing the contract, Hussein underwent 16 days of military training provided by Russia. On October 1, he was deployed on his first combat mission in Ukraine. Hussein fought for three days but later surrendered due to a conflict with his commander. He told Ukrainian forces he encountered their trench and immediately laid down his weapon, seeking help.

Hussein said he did not want to continue fighting and requested assistance from Ukrainian soldiers. He disclosed that he never received the financial compensation promised by Russian recruiters. Russian forces have been accused of recruiting foreign nationals, including Indians, with false job promises. Hussein expressed his desire not to return to Russia due to the deception he faced. He prefers imprisonment in Ukraine over returning to Russia’s system, which he called dishonest. His testimony highlights the complicated situation of foreign recruits caught in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Indian authorities continue investigating the claims and tracking other Indian nationals involved in the conflict.
