India entered the T20 World Cup as overwhelming favourites, but Thursday has turned into a decisive moment for them. For 18 months, they dominated with a fearless batting unit led by the explosive Abhishek Sharma. Experts expected them to cruise into the final and defend their title. Instead, they now face an unexpected battle for survival.
With two Super 8 games left, India no longer control their own destiny. They will closely watch South Africa’s clash against West Indies before facing Zimbabwe at Chepauk. A South African win could ease the pressure on them. However, India must deliver a commanding performance against Zimbabwe to stay in contention.

Team India look to reshuffle openers with campaign hanging in the balance
India’s batting unit, once their biggest strength, has failed to replicate its past consistency. The top order has struggled to build strong starts throughout the tournament. As a result, the team has not managed to dominate matches from the outset. This dip in form has pushed them into a reactive position.
Frequent changes at the top have added to the uncertainty. The Abhishek-Sanju Samson pairing once looked settled before selectors introduced Shubman Gill and later Ishan Kishan into the mix. Samson lost his spot after inconsistent performances, while opening partnerships failed to cross significant marks. The highest stand so far remains a modest 25 runs.
Opponents have exploited India’s weaknesses, particularly with effective use of off-spin. The team management now considers recalling Samson to revive the top order. They may reshuffle the batting lineup ahead of the Zimbabwe match. India must act decisively as they attempt to reclaim control of their campaign.
