Jaishankar Discusses Border Issues with China’s Wang Yi

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held discussions with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, on Thursday in Astana, Kazakhstan, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Heads of State summit. Sharing photos from their meeting, Jaishankar posted on X, “We discussed the early resolution of the remaining issues in the border areas and agreed to intensify efforts through diplomatic and military channels to achieve this. Respecting the LAC and ensuring peace and tranquility in the border areas is essential.”

Ministry of External Affairs Press Release on India-China Border Situation

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a press release stating, “The two Ministers concurred that prolonging the current situation in the border areas is not beneficial for either side. The External Affairs Minister emphasized the necessity of intensifying efforts to achieve full disengagement from the remaining areas in Eastern Ladakh and to restore peace and tranquility at the border, thereby eliminating obstacles to the normalization of bilateral relations.”

Jaishankar also reiterated the “importance of fully adhering to relevant bilateral agreements, protocols, and understandings previously reached between the two Governments,” the statement said. “Both Ministers agreed to continue and intensify meetings between the diplomatic and military officials of both sides to advance discussions and resolve the remaining issues as soon as possible. To this end, they concurred that the Working Mechanism on Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) should convene an early meeting,” the Ministry stated.
