Big Agreement on Cards as Carney Visits India

Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit India this week to strengthen diplomatic ties and push forward a big agreement agenda between the two nations. India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, said the visit will reset relations and open new trade opportunities. Both sides plan to expand cooperation in nuclear power, oil, and critical minerals. Officials also aim to sign cooperation pacts in research, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and education. The visit signals a clear shift from past tensions and reflects strong political intent to rebuild trust.

Big Agreement to Boost Trade and Energy Ties

During the trip, Canada and India may finalize a big agreement to expand uranium exports to support India’s nuclear energy needs. India has also shown interest in purchasing Canadian heavy crude and other energy products. In addition, Indian companies are exploring investments in Canadian infrastructure projects such as pipelines and terminals. Carney and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier agreed to restart talks on a free-trade deal. Officials now believe they can conclude that trade pact within a year. Both economies have evolved, and global trade pressures — including US tariffs — have encouraged diversification. Leaders see this momentum as an opportunity to seal a big agreement that benefits both countries.

Diplomatic Reset After Past Strain

The visit marks a major turnaround after diplomatic tensions in 2023 and 2024. Canada had expelled Indian officials over serious allegations, and relations deteriorated sharply. However, since Carney replaced Justin Trudeau, both governments have worked to rebuild dialogue. Patnaik described the moment as a “total reset” and stressed that both democracies must cooperate as global partners.

Carney will travel to Mumbai and New Delhi, meet business and education leaders, and revive the Canada-India CEO Forum. The visit highlights his trade-focused foreign policy. By prioritizing economic collaboration, both countries hope to finalize a big agreement framework that strengthens long-term strategic and commercial ties.
