US President-elect Donald Trump has announced plans to impose reciprocal tariffs on countries, including India, that levy high duties on American goods. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump emphasized that the US will respond equally to nations taxing its products. “If they tax us, we tax them the same amount,” he stated, highlighting that several countries impose substantial tariffs on American goods, while the US has not reciprocated similarly.

India and Brazil in Spotlight
While discussing potential trade agreements with China, Trump singled out India and Brazil for their high tariffs on certain US products. He cited examples, stating that if India charges 100% duty on US goods, the US will impose a similar tariff in return. Trump stressed the need for fairness, pointing out the imbalance in the current trade practices with these countries.

Focus on Reciprocity in Trade Policies
Howard Lutnick, Trump’s pick for Commerce Secretary, echoed the President-elect’s sentiments. Declaring “reciprocity” as a cornerstone of the incoming administration’s trade policies. Lutnick asserted, “How you treat us is how you should expect to be treated,” indicating a shift towards stricter trade measures under Trump’s leadership.

Biden Administration Highlights Strong US-India Ties
As the Biden administration prepares to transition, officials emphasized the strength of the India-US relationship. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell highlighted recent high-level engagements, including the QUAD summit. And expressed optimism about continued bipartisan support for the relationship during Trump’s presidency. The outgoing administration believes it is leaving the partnership in a strong position for further growth.
