Donald Trump suggested Canada merge with the U.S after Trudeau’s resignation

President-elect Donald Trump reacted to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation by suggesting Canada become the “51st state” of the United States, a proposal he has mentioned before.

In a Truth Social post, Donald Trumps argued that merging Canada with the U.S. could benefit many Canadians. He claimed the U.S. could no longer endure the trade deficits and subsidies Canada relies on, stating, “Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned.” Trump suggested that a merger would remove tariffs, reduce taxes, and bolster Canada’s security against Russia and China, declaring, “Together, what a great nation it would be!”

During a prior meeting at his Mar-a-Lago resort with Justin Trudeau, Donald suggested that if Canada’s economy collapsed under U.S. tariffs, it could merge with the United States. Trump has consistently criticized Canada’s trade practices, particularly its trade deficit with the U.S., and previously warned of a 25% tariff on all Canadian imports unless Canada took tougher measures to control migration.

Justin Trudeau’s resignation marks the end of nearly a decade in power, during which he faced both significant achievements and mounting challenges. His departure comes amid declining poll numbers and growing internal divisions within his Liberal Party, signaling a moment of reckoning for Canadian politics. Throughout his tenure, Trudeau positioned himself as a progressive leader, championing issues like climate action, gender equality, and diversity. However, his popularity waned in recent years, with critics pointing to ethics scandals, economic challenges, and dissatisfaction with his government’s handling of various issues, including housing and inflation.
