Avalanche in Lake Tahoe Leaves 10 Skiers Missing

An avalanche struck California’s Lake Tahoe region on Tuesday, leaving 10 backcountry skiers missing and six others stranded as rescuers race against dangerous weather conditions. Authorities received reports of the avalanche around 11:30 PST in the Castle Peak area near Truckee. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the group included 16 people in total. Officials said four guides and 12 clients were part of the expedition. Emergency teams immediately began coordinating a rescue response.

Rescue teams quickly mobilised after confirming that at least six skiers survived the avalanche. Authorities instructed the survivors to shelter in place while waiting for help. The sheriff’s office deployed highly skilled rescue ski teams from two nearby resorts. Officials also launched a SnoCat vehicle to assist in navigating the heavy snow. Rescuers continue efforts to locate the remaining 10 missing skiers.

Rescue teams search for 10 missing skiers after avalanche

Experts from Boreal Mountain Ski Resort and Alder Creek Adventure Center joined the operation to reach the avalanche site. Authorities deployed 46 emergency first responders to support the rescue mission. Crews are working carefully due to unstable snow conditions in the area. Officials warned that the risk of additional avalanches remains high. Teams are monitoring the terrain closely as they conduct search operations.

The Sierra Avalanche Center issued a high danger warning, rating conditions four out of five on its scale. Forecasters predicted that large avalanches could occur through Tuesday night and into early Wednesday morning. Officials advised people to avoid travelling near avalanche-prone terrain. They also warned that large avalanches could move through wooded areas. Authorities urged extreme caution across backcountry regions.

Heavy snowfall contributed to the hazardous conditions in the Lake Tahoe area. Boreal Mountain Ski Resort reported 30 inches of snow in the past 24 hours. The resort closed operations on Tuesday due to strong winds and low visibility. The storm also forced officials to shut down major highways, including Interstate 80 and Highway 50. Authorities continue to assess weather conditions as rescue operations remain ongoing.
