Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi has ignited a heated debate by threatening to send a herd of 20,000 elephants to Germany amid tensions over wildlife conservation and human-animal conflict. In an interview with German daily Bild, President Masisi criticized Germany’s stance on trophy hunting restrictions, arguing that such measures would exacerbate Botswana’s elephant overpopulation issue, which he likened to a “plague.”

Masisi suggests that Germans adopt the Botswana approach of coexisting with animals. To manage the population, Botswana issues annual hunting licenses.

The ban on importing hunting trophies into Germany has intensified the dispute, as Botswana views it as a potential exacerbation of their existing challenges. Masisi expressed frustration, stating that it’s easy for outsiders to opine on Botswana’s affairs from afar without understanding the realities on the ground. As a consequence of preserving these animals, Botswana believes it is paying a significant price.

In response to the potential restriction in Germany, Masisi did not shy away from suggesting that Botswana could gift thousands of elephants to Germany.
