Tremors were felt across Kolkata, several districts of West Bengal, and parts of Northeast India after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday morning. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake occurred near Dhaka, prompting brief panic among residents in nearby Indian regions. People in Kolkata reported sudden shaking around 10:10 am, with many stepping out of homes and offices until the tremors subsided. No injuries or damage have been recorded so far.

Quake Near Dhaka Triggers Tremors Across Eastern India Kolkata
The India Meteorological Department said the epicenter was located 13 km south-southwest of Narsingdi, roughly 50 km from Dhaka, at a shallow depth of 10 km. The mild but noticeable tremors were also experienced in districts such as Cooch Behar, Uttar Dinajpur, and Dakshin Dinajpur. Authorities monitored the situation and confirmed that the quake did not affect infrastructure in the region.
Residents in Northeastern cities including Guwahati, Agartala, and Shillong also reported experiencing light tremors. Many people shared videos on social media showing ceiling fixtures swaying and buildings vibrating briefly. Emergency services remained alert but stated that there were no reports of significant disruptions. In Dhaka, the earthquake briefly halted the ongoing Test match between Bangladesh and Ireland. Players and spectators paused as tremors were felt inside the stadium, but play resumed within minutes after officials confirmed that conditions were safe. No structural damage was reported at the venue.
