Top Bangladesh Intelligence Officials’ Pakistan Visit Raises Security Concerns in India

Six Bangladeshi intelligence officials reportedly travelled to Pakistan on August 15, raising concerns in New Delhi. The timing attracted attention as India celebrated its 80th Independence Day. According to Bangladeshi media reports, the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) team travelled to Islamabad on an undisclosed mission. The visit came amid uncertainty over Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible trip to India. It also highlighted the growing security engagement between Dhaka and Islamabad.

Pakistan Expands Intelligence Outreach In Bangladesh

The DGFI delegation reportedly included Colonel Magfuz-ul-Bari, Wing Commander Imrul Kais, Mohiuddin Mohammad Asif, Squadron Leader Raihan Mohammad Chowdhury, Murad Hossain Tushar and Khandokar Ariful Islam. The team reportedly departed from Hazrat Shah Jalal International Airport on a Thai Airways flight. They travelled to Islamabad via Bangkok and held meetings with officials from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). However, details about the purpose and outcome of the meetings remain undisclosed.

The latest visit follows DGFI Director General Major General Kaisar Rashid Chowdhury’s trip to Pakistan in April. He became the first DGFI chief to visit Pakistan since Bangladesh gained independence in 1971. Before travelling to Islamabad, Chowdhury had also visited New Delhi in March. During his India trip, he met senior national security officials and discussed security-related issues. His back-to-back visits highlighted Dhaka’s growing engagement with both India and Pakistan.

India Watches Dhaka-Islamabad Security Ties

New Delhi has closely monitored the growing contact between Bangladesh and Pakistan. Indian officials remain concerned about the Pakistan Army and ISI’s reported influence during the 18-month tenure of the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government. Chowdhury’s earlier visit to New Delhi also attracted attention after he reportedly did not attend a dinner hosted by Bangladesh’s High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah. The latest DGFI-ISI engagement could further increase India’s security concerns.

Indian analysts believe deeper defence and intelligence cooperation between Bangladesh and Pakistan could affect India’s eastern security environment. Some observers have compared the development with Pakistan’s expanding strategic ties with Saudi Arabia. Those relations have reportedly moved beyond training and intelligence cooperation towards broader defence coordination. Experts warn that a similar shift in Dhaka-Islamabad relations could create challenges for India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy. The developments come as Bangladesh’s political and diplomatic ties with New Delhi continue to evolve.
