The ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister’s stay in India has been extended by the central government under a ‘long-term arrangement,’ even as Dhaka continues to demand her extradition, official sources informed CNN-News18.
India’s Tradition of Hospitality: A Unique Arrangement for Sheikh Hasina
Officials familiar with the situation stated that her extended stay is a unique arrangement, reflecting India’s tradition of hospitality embodied in the motto “Atithi Devo Bhava” (Guest is God).
They noted that Hasina had previously spent an extended period in India after the assassination of her father in 1975.
The announcement follows the Centre’s decision to extend Hasina’s visa a day earlier and comes two days after Bangladesh’s interim government revoked the passport of the ousted Prime Minister and 96 others, citing their alleged involvement in enforced disappearances and the July killings.

Hasina, 77, has been residing in India since August 5 of last year after fleeing Bangladesh in the wake of a large-scale student-led protest that ended her Awami League’s (AL) 16-year rule.
Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants for Hasina, along with several former Cabinet ministers, advisers, and military and civil officials, accusing them of “crimes against humanity and genocide.” The tribunal has set February 12 as the deadline.
