Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese attended Eid prayers at Sydney’s Lakemba Mosque on Friday. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke joined him after community leaders invited both ministers. The visit marked the end of Ramadan at one of Australia’s largest mosques. During the event, several attendees loudly criticised the leaders over government policies. Some protesters accused them of supporting violence and demanded they leave immediately.
A mosque leader addressed the crowd and urged the government to engage better. He said Muslim Australians needed meaningful attention instead of symbolic political appearances. As he spoke, some members of the audience continued shouting at Albanese and Burke. Police removed one man who yelled at the prime minister inside the mosque. Later, officers released him without charge and told him to leave.

After the speech ended, Albanese walked through the crowd toward the mosque exit. Several people kept shouting at him while others questioned his presence there. One protester called the visit disgraceful and demanded officials remove the prime minister. Despite the disruption, the event continued and many worshippers remained in attendance. The mosque later clarified that Albanese had been welcome at the gathering.
The Lebanese Muslim Association said community emotions remained strong over Gaza and Lebanon. It explained that these conflicts deeply affected many families within Australia’s Muslim community. The group also defended its decision to invite Australia’s elected national leadership. Leaders said engagement with politicians helps communities express concerns through direct dialogue. They insisted that such meetings do not betray suffering people overseas.
Later, Albanese told reporters that most of the huge crowd welcomed him warmly. He said only a small number of protesters created tension during prayers. He also linked some anger to recent bans on extremist organisations. Australia has faced rising antisemitism and Islamophobia since the October 2023 conflict began. The incident again showed how overseas wars continue shaping tensions inside Australia.
