Chinese Military Claims Arunachal Pradesh as China’s Territory

The Chinese military has restated its assertion of ownership over Arunachal Pradesh, labeling the region as an “inherent part of China’s territory.” This comes shortly after India dismissed Beijing’s objection to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state.

Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang, spokesman for the Chinese Defense Ministry, reiterated China’s stance, declaring that the southern part of Xizang (Tibet) is an integral territory of China. He further emphasized Beijing’s firm opposition to the “so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally established by India.” These comments was made in response to reports of India’s military readiness augmentation via the Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh, as report by the Chinese Defense Ministry’s website on Friday.

China Objects to Indian Leaders’ Visits to Arunachal Pradesh

China, asserting Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet and renaming it as Zangnan, consistently protests against visits by Indian leaders to the state, emphasizing its territorial claims. In response, India reaffirms that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of the nation, rejecting China’s assertions and dismissing the renaming as inconsequential.

PM Modi Inaugurates Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh

On March 9, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Sela Tunnel in AP, situated at an altitude of 13,000 feet. The tunnel, constructed at a cost of Rs 825 crore, facilitates all-weather connectivity to strategically significant Tawang, enhancing troop movement along the frontier region. It is acclaime as the world’s longest bi-lane road tunnel at such a high altitude, located on the route connecting Assam’s Tezpur to Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district.

Zhang criticized India’s actions, stating that they undermine efforts to ease border tensions and hinder the maintenance of peace and tranquility in border regions. He specifically referred to Prime Minister Modi’s visit, emphasizing that the current border situation remains generally stable. Zhang highlighted the effectiveness of diplomatic and military communication between both countries on border matters of mutual concern.
