Aircraft Losses Mount As US Loses 16 In Iran Conflict

The conflict with Iran has destroyed at least 16 US military aircraft, including enemy fire that shot down 10 Reaper drones, while attacks and accidents have severely damaged several others.

Aircraft Losses Rise As Accidents, Drone Losses Push US Toll

The most severe incidents were due to accidents. Friendly fire downed three US F-15 fighter jets in Kuwait, while an aerial refueling operation destroyed a KC-135 tanker and killed all six crew members on board. Additionally, an Iranian missile strike damaged five KC-135 aircraft stationed at an airbase in Saudi Arabia. So far, Iranian defenses have directly downed only unmanned Reaper drones, shooting at least nine out of the sky and hitting one with a ballistic missile at an airfield in Jordan. Separate accidents have also destroyed two more drones. The military designs these drones to be expendable and deploys them in high-risk zones due to their lower cost and lack of onboard pilots.

Compared to past conflicts, the losses are notably higher.During the 2011 military campaign in Libya, forces reported only three combat losses over four months, including one US Navy drone.Experts suggest the increased losses may be due to the intensity of operations. Peter Layton noted that the US carried out more strikes on the first day of the war than it did during the “shock and awe” phase of the Gulf War, indicating a much higher operational tempo. The US Central Command has declined to comment on specific damage assessments. Meanwhile, despite early efforts to neutralize Iran’s air defenses, achieving full air dominance has proven difficult.

F-35 Hit, Limited Air Superiority Amid Rising Iran War Risks

In one recent incident, Iranian fire reportedly hit an advanced F-35 fighter jet, forcing it to make an emergency landing at a US base in the region. The aircraft landed safely, and the pilot remains in stable condition. Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, stated that the US currently has only localized air superiority, controlling limited portions of Iranian airspace. The repeated downing of Reaper drones also highlights the challenges of securing strategic routes like the Strait of Hormuz, where active air defense systems pose significant risks.

Military analysts say such losses are not unusual in high-intensity operations. Justin Bronk described accidents like mid-air collisions involving refueling aircraft as unfortunate but expected during sustained combat missions. As the conflict enters its third week, Iran continues to launch strikes across the region, though US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the pace of attacks has dropped significantly since the early days of the war. Western and Israeli assessments say forces have destroyed around 60% of Iran’s missile launchers, though they have slowed progress in recent days. In retaliation, Iran recently targeted key energy facilities in Qatar and Saudi Arabia following strikes on its South Pars gas field.
