600,000 gallons of red wine flood small Portuguese town, road looks like red river

On Sunday, a coastal village in Portugal experienced an unusual and striking event. Approximately 600,000 gallons of red wine inundated the streets of São Lorenco de Bairro. This dramatic incident occurred due to the rupture of two tanks owned by the Levira Distillery. It caused the stored wine to rush downhill through the small town, home to around 2,000 residents. The scale of the spill was so significant that the quantity of spilled wine could have filled an Olympic-sized swimming pool, prompting concerns for the environment. Fortunately, this crimson deluge did not result in any injuries or property damage. It was even reported that some of the wine made its way into a nearby cellar, as documented by the Portuguese newspaper Diário de Coimbra.

Anadia Fire Department was working to divert the wine in order to prevent the contamination of the nearby Certima River. A local environment alert had been issued due to the spillage.

Wine Flood Video Goes Viral

The video of the said incident went viral across social media platforms. Some users even taking a hilarious take on the incident. A user named Tahir Imran Mian while sharing the video of the event wrote, “When they said to drown your sorrows I didn’t know that will happen one day.”

An American daily, quoted the Levira Distillery as the entity apologised to the citizens of São Lorenco de Bairro. They said they would take care of the damages done due to the wine flooding. The Distillery issued a statement in which it said, “We assume full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, having teams do so immediately.”

The statement added, “We are committed to resolving this situation as quickly as possible.”

As per the company, the soil which is now soaked with wine will be taken to a specific treatment plant for it to return to its normal state, reported USA Today.
