At least 33 dead, 60 hospitalised in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi after consuming illicit liquor

MK Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, conveyed his shock over the deaths and declared that they had taken action against those accountable for failing to prevent the incident. On Thursday, officials reported that at least 33 people had died and over 60 had been hospitalized on Wednesday after allegedly consuming illicit liquor in the Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu. They warned that the death toll might increase. Hospitals in Salem, Tiruvannamalai, and Puducherry are treating critical patients.

Tamil Nadu CM’s Response to Illicit Liquor Tragedy

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his shock and sorrow over the deaths caused by adulterated liquor in Kallakurichi. In a post on X, he expressed his shock and sadness over the deaths caused by adulterated liquor in Kallakurichi. He announced that authorities had arrested those involved in the crime and had disciplined the officials who failed to prevent it. He assured the public that they would take immediate action against anyone involved in such crimes if they received information, emphasizing a firm stance against these societal threats. The Tamil Nadu government also reported the arrest of K Kannukutti, 49, after seizing around 200 liters of illegal liquor containing deadly methanol from him.

Stalin has directed a thorough investigation by the Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department (CB-CID). According to a statement, the Tamil Nadu government has replaced Kallakurichi district collector Sravan Kumar Jatavath and suspended superintendent of police Samay Singh Meena. Additionally, authorities have suspended nine other police officers, including members of the Kallakurichi prohibition wing.

New Appointments and Official Visits in Response to the Tragedy

MS Prasanth, the newly appointed collector of Kallakurichi district, visited the patients at the Government Medical College Hospital. Rajath Chaturvedi is now serving as the district’s police superintendent. Chief Minister Stalin dispatched senior ministers EV Velu and Ma Subramanian to Kallakurichi to assist the affected families. Approximately 15 people were admitted to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry. Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi expressed his condolences for the deaths and wished the victims a speedy recovery.

The statement highlighted ongoing issues with illicit alcohol production and consumption in the state, calling it a matter of serious concern.
