Inside National University Hospital’s (NUH) Latest Health Tech Hub

National University Hospital (NUH) has launched a new Innovation Hub designed to act as both an incubator and a real-world sandbox for medtech and AI startups. The facility enables companies to test, validate, and scale digital health solutions within live clinical environments. By embedding innovation directly into care settings, the hospital aims to accelerate practical adoption. The hub reflects a growing push toward applied healthcare technology.

The initiative comes as Singapore faces mounting healthcare pressures from an ageing population, increasing care complexity, and workforce shortages. Authorities are seeking technology-driven solutions to maintain efficiency and quality of care. The Innovation Hub positions NUH at the center of this transformation. It aims to bridge gaps between innovation and real-world healthcare delivery.

Developed under the NUH Kent Ridge Office of Innovation, the hub brings together clinicians, startups, academia, and industry players. These stakeholders collaborate within NUH’s clinical environment to co-develop and validate solutions. The structured pathway ensures innovations move from ideation to deployment effectively. It also emphasizes clinical relevance, workflow integration, and scalability.

As an incubator, the hub supports the creation and refinement of in-house and external digital health tools. Projects like MedBot, a virtual pharmacy assistant, have already reduced workload by saving around 28 man-hours monthly. Another tool, the ED Summarizer, has significantly cut clinicians’ documentation time. These innovations demonstrate measurable efficiency gains. The hub continues to nurture similar high-impact solutions.

On the sandbox front, NUH collaborates with the Infocomm Media Development Authority through its Open Innovation Platform. This allows startups to pilot solutions against real clinical and operational challenges. The hub provides a controlled yet realistic environment for testing. It ensures solutions are validated before wider deployment.

The Innovation Hub also focuses on workforce development by training healthcare staff in digital tools and AI adoption. More than 3,400 NUH employees have already completed innovation-related training programs. Partnerships with organizations like Elsevier and National University of Singapore further strengthen research and talent development. These collaborations help expand the hospital’s innovation ecosystem.

Looking ahead, NUH plans to scale successful solutions across the broader healthcare system while addressing barriers such as workflow integration and clinical trust. The hub will prioritize areas like robotics, digital twins, and data-driven decision tools. Officials aim to ensure innovations move beyond pilot stages into full deployment. The long-term goal is to build a sustainable, tech-enabled healthcare system.
