Maharashtra records first suspected death due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome; cases in Pune cross 100

A patient from Pune has reportedly died from Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), marking the first suspected fatality linked to the disease in Maharashtra. The individual passed away in Solapur district while visiting his native village for personal reasons. Meanwhile, Pune has recorded over 100 cases of GBS to date.

Patient’s Health Deteriorated Despite Initial Signs of Improvement

The deceased had symptoms of cold, cough, experienced breathing difficulties and was hospitalised for same on January 18 in a private hospital in Solapur. He was first placed in the ICU ward but later shifted to a regular room after showing improvement. However, his health started deteriorating with difficulty in breathing and he later passed away in the hospital’s ICU unit where he had been readmitted. The deceased also experienced paralysis in his limbs, prior to his demise.

GBS Cases Rise to 101, 16 Patients on Ventilator Support

TOn Sunday, the number of GBS cases rose to 101, including 68 males and 33 females. State health officials reported one suspected death in Solapur. Out of the total cases, 16 patients are on ventilator support. Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations reported 81 and 14 cases, respectively, making up 95 cases in total. Meanwhile, the Rapid Response Team (RRT) and the health department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) continued monitoring the affected Sinhgad Road area in the city.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome: A Rare Condition Triggered by Infections

It is a rare condition which causes both sudden numbness and weakness in muscles, with symptoms including severe weakness in the limbs, loose motions etc. Bacterial and viral infections generally lead to GBS as these weaken the immunity of patients, doctors say.
