A Chinese social media influencer died after chugging two full bottles of baijiu, a strong Chinese liquor, during a livestreamed drinking challenge. The 34-year-old man, known online as “Brother Three Thousand,” collapsed shortly after completing the challenge and was later found dead in his apartment by friends. The incident has sparked intense debate about the dangers of extreme content on social platforms.
According to reports, the influencer consumed two bottles of baijiu—each containing over 50% alcohol—within just 20 minutes. After completing the challenge, he ended the livestream but soon fell unconscious. Experts believe he suffered from acute alcohol poisoning, a condition that can occur when alcohol is consumed faster than the body can metabolize it.
Experts Warn Against Extreme Drinking Challenges
Medical professionals explained that such high levels of alcohol in a short time can overwhelm the liver, slow breathing, lower heart rate, and eventually lead to coma or death. Dr. Lin Wei, a toxicologist, stated, “The liver can typically process one standard drink per hour. Consuming this much alcohol so quickly left his body no time to recover or respond.”
This tragedy has once again raised concerns about the “likes-for-risks” culture in the influencer industry. Chinese authorities have previously cracked down on dangerous online challenges, but many content creators continue to take extreme risks for engagement and popularity. The platform where the livestream aired has since taken down the video and launched an internal investigation.
Health experts urge social media platforms and audiences to discourage such harmful content and support responsible online behavior. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of how chasing virality can have fatal consequences.
