The sudden death of maverick fund manager Siddhartha Bhaiya has once again raised alarm over the growing number of sudden deaths among young Indians. Bhaiya died of cardiac arrest on December 31 while on holiday in New Zealand. His death has drawn attention to the need to look beyond heart attacks and focus on other hidden risks linked to heart health.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest: A Silent Electrical Failure Behind Millions of Deaths
Sudden cardiac arrest happens when an electrical malfunction disrupts the heart’s normal rhythm and causes it to stop abruptly. Data published in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine shows that the condition leads to nearly four to five million deaths worldwide each year and accounts for about 10 per cent of all cardiac-related deaths in India.

Medical experts say that a heart attack can trigger sudden cardiac arrest when blocked blood flow interferes with the heart’s electrical signals. However, several other factors can also cause the condition.
Dr Darshan Krishnappa, a cardiac electrophysiologist at Manipal Hospitals in Bengaluru and formerly associated with AIIMS and PGIMER, explains that ventricular fibrillation, in which the heart’s lower chambers beat rapidly and irregularly, prevents the heart from pumping oxygen-rich blood effectively.
Dr Krishnappa adds that structural changes in the heart muscle, genetic heart rhythm disorders, and heart failure—where the heart fails to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs—also increase the risk of sudden cardiac arrest. His explanation helps clarify the condition and underlines the importance of early detection and comprehensive heart screening.
