Free and Voluntary HPV Vaccination Drive

The Health Ministry has designed the HPV vaccination campaign to cover eligible girls in schools and health centres. Officials will not make the vaccine mandatory. Instead, they will encourage families to participate through awareness campaigns. The government wants to remove financial barriers. Therefore, it will provide the vaccine free of charge nationwide.

Health workers will coordinate with state authorities to implement the programme smoothly. They will also spread information about cervical cancer prevention. Moreover, they will guide parents about vaccine safety and benefits. The ministry believes early immunisation can significantly reduce future health risks. As a result, officials expect strong public response once the campaign begins.

Gardasil to Protect Against Cancer-Causing HPV Types

India will use Gardasil, a quadrivalent vaccine developed to protect against four types of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The vaccine shields recipients from HPV types 16 and 18, which cause most cervical cancer cases. In addition, it protects against types 6 and 11, which lead to other HPV-related conditions.

According to senior Health Ministry officials, scientific studies support the effectiveness of a single dose in the recommended age group. Experts confirm that one dose provides strong and long-lasting protection. Therefore, the government has adopted this strategy for the national rollout.

Through this HPV vaccination initiative, authorities aim to reduce cervical cancer cases in the long term. The programme marks a major public health step. It also reflects India’s focus on preventive healthcare for adolescent girls.
