Based on statistics provided by the state’s health department, out of the 26,470 instances of fever reported between January and July this year, a sum of 3,164 cases were identified as dengue infections. Among these 3,164 cases, 1,967 were documented from January until the end of June, while 1,197 cases emerged in the month of July up to the 28th. Dr. Pratasinh Sarnikar, the Joint Director of Health in Maharashtra, informed that there has been a marginal increase in the occurrences of dengue viral infection.
“However it is not alarming and surveillance activities are underway,” he said.
Twelve municipal corporations have been instructed by the state health department to hire contract workers. They will be hired for the purpose of inspecting locations conducive to mosquito breeding. This list of twelve includes municipal corporations such as Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, and Kolhapur. Along with, Nagpur, Nashik, Solapur, Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Kalyan, Dhule, Amravati, and Chandrapur.

Dengue Prevention Initiative
Each municipal corporation can appoint 25 such workers. Labelled as “breeding site checkers”, state health department officials said that they will have to inspect 200 houses daily in the corporation areas.
This move is in addition to the already existing container surveys that are underway to identify mosquito breeding sites. Last year, Maharashtra reported 8,578 cases of dengue fever and 27 deaths.
In 2021, there were 12,720 cases of dengue viral infection and 42 deaths. Officials said that intermittent rain has led to a rise in the number of cases across the states.
For instance, till July this year Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reported 1,115 cases of dengue, Nashik reported 144 and Sangli-Miraj 106.
Pune Municipal Corporation reported 33 cases of dengue infection and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation reported 30 cases while Pune rural areas have registered 53. State health department data shows Nagpur has reported 84 dengue cases, Aurangabad 43, Kolhapur 69 and Thane reported 63. Solapur has registered 58 cases so far.
