As Delhi battles an intense heatwave, residents are dealing with more than just soaring temperatures. Many people are complaining of constant tiredness, irritability, headaches, and low energy throughout the day. With temperatures expected to touch 44°C in the coming days, health experts warn that extreme heat can affect the body in several ways. Even people staying indoors are reporting exhaustion, showing that summer fatigue is not only caused by direct sunlight but by how heat impacts the body overall.
Doctors explain that during hot weather, the body works harder to maintain its normal temperature. It loses fluids continuously through sweating, breathing, and everyday movement. If people do not replace those fluids in time, dehydration begins to develop. This often leads to dizziness, headaches, weakness, poor concentration, and the drained feeling many people experience during summer. Experts say waiting until you feel thirsty is already a late sign, as the body may already be struggling to recover lost fluids.
Health specialists also point out that drinking plain water is not always enough in extreme heat. When the body sweats heavily, it loses important electrolytes such as sodium and potassium along with water. These minerals help maintain energy levels, muscle function, and proper hydration. If they are not replaced, people may continue to feel weak even after drinking water. Doctors recommend oral rehydration solutions, coconut water, or electrolyte-rich drinks for those spending long hours outdoors.

Too Much AC Can Make Summer Fatigue Worse
Air conditioning may offer quick relief, but overuse can also increase fatigue. Moving repeatedly between intense outdoor heat and cold indoor spaces forces the body to constantly adjust. This sudden shift can leave people feeling sluggish instead of refreshed. Experts say long exposure to air-conditioned rooms may also cause dryness, mild dehydration, and discomfort, especially when people forget to drink enough fluids indoors.
Doctors warn that heat exhaustion often develops slowly, which is why many people ignore the early signs. Mild headaches, reduced focus, irritability, unusual tiredness, and feeling sleepy earlier than normal are common warning signals. Since these symptoms appear routine during summer, many dismiss them until they become more serious. Recognising these signs early can help prevent worsening exhaustion and heat-related illness.
Experts also note that weekends can leave people even more tired. Many step out for errands, shopping, or social gatherings during peak afternoon heat without changing their hydration habits or taking enough rest. Sudden exposure to harsh weather after spending weekdays indoors can quickly drain energy. Doctors advise people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun during peak hours, eat light meals, and rest properly to stay healthy during Delhi’s heatwave.
