Northern plains are preparing for severe cold and steadily falling temperatures.
Authorities expect widespread cold-day conditions and dense to very dense fog through mid-January.
Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi will likely see further drops in minimum temperatures.
Meteorologists said the sharp temperature drop signals the buildup to the peak wave phase.
The coldest period is expected between January 8 and January 15.
Several stations in Haryana, Punjab, northwest Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh may record severe cold conditions.
Winter conditions will sharply worsen across large parts of India beginning January 7, according to weather experts.

An intense wave will grip much of northern India from Tuesday night, meteorologists warned.
Temperatures fell to single digits across several cities by 8:30 pm, signalling a prolonged winter spell.
Experts compared the developing wave to severe spells seen in December 2019 and early 2024.
Cold-day conditions may persist across northern states between January 8 and January 16.

Several north Indian cities reported near-freezing temperatures before nightfall on Tuesday.
Churu recorded 8.6 degrees Celsius, while Patiala registered 9 degrees Celsius.
Delhi, Rohtak, and Kota each recorded 9.6 degrees Celsius, marking a sharp daily decline.
Chandigarh reported 9.8 degrees Celsius, while Amritsar, Ambala, and Hisar hovered near 10 degrees.
Meteorologists said temperatures will continue dropping ahead of the cold wave peak.
The coldest phase may occur between January 8 and January 15.
Several stations could record “cold blast” conditions with single-digit daytime temperatures.
