On Friday, Maharashtra health authorities announced the identification of 73 cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological condition.Dr. Babita Kamalapurkar, the Joint Director of Health for Maharashtra, shared with The Indian Express that an extensive survey has been conducted to address the situation in affected areas. These include regions such as Sinhagad, Dhayari, Khadakwasla, along with parts of Pimpri Chinchwad and rural Pune. The survey aimed to track and assess the extent of the condition’s spread by examining over 7,000 households in these regions.

According to data from the Maharashtra state health department, out of the 73 reported cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), individuals are affected across various age groups.

The state’s analysis highlights that Guillain-Barré Syndrome is affecting people across a broad spectrum of ages, with the most significant impact seen among children, adolescents, and older adults in the 60-69 age group. This data underscores the need for targeted health measures and awareness across all age groups.

Extensive Surveys Conducted Across Affected Areas
Forty four of the 73 patients are from rural parts of Pune, 11 from within municipal corporation limits and 15 patients from Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation. Three patients are from other districts. There are 47 men and 26 women who have GBS and are admitted across various hospitals.

At Poona hospital and research centre, consulting neurologist Dr Sudhir Kothari and infectious diseases consultant Dr Amit Dravid had earlier reported that samples of their four patients had been detected with the campylobacter jejuni bacteria.
Dr Kothari who is also former President of Neurological Society of Pune said that there were various causes of GBS which is a rare neurological disorder. On Friday Dr Dravid said that two more samples one from Patil hospital at Sinhagad road and other from Noble hospital have also shown presence of campylobacter jejuni.
