Andhra Pradesh: 7-Year-Old Dies, Over 50 Hospitalised After Taking Anti-Malaria Drug; Probe Underway

A seven-year-old girl died and 52 people fell ill after taking anti-malarial chloroquine tablets in Andhra Pradesh. Health officials distributed the tablets in Golaguppa village near the Telangana border to prevent malaria. Soon after taking the medicine, several people reported headaches and other health problems. Authorities immediately shifted the affected people to hospitals and health centres. Officials have launched an investigation into the incident.

52 People Fall Ill After Taking Chloroquine Tablets

Officials said health workers gave anti-malarial tablets to 71 people in the village. Shortly after consuming the tablets, many recipients complained of headaches and other symptoms. The administration admitted 29 patients to a hospital in Telangana, while another 24 received treatment at a nearby health centre. Doctors are closely monitoring all the patients and have reported that their conditions remain stable. The incident caused concern among residents in the village.

A second-grade student, identified as Madivi Jamuna, died while receiving treatment, according to reports. Doctors are continuing to monitor the remaining patients and have assured residents that their conditions remain stable. District Collector Dinesh Kumar urged people not to panic and said officials were taking all necessary measures. Medical teams have also reached the village to assess the situation. Authorities are investigating whether the tablets caused the illness.

CM Chandrababu Naidu Orders High-Level Probe

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to conduct a high-level investigation into the incident. He asked the authorities to submit a detailed report and ensure proper arrangements for the patients. The district administration has also stepped up medical support in the affected village. Officials are working to determine what caused so many people to fall ill after taking the tablets. The government will take further action based on the findings of the probe.

A nine-member medical team from Kakinada Government General Hospital has reached the village to assist the local health authorities. Three additional teams from Vijayawada, Rajamahendravaram and Kakinada are also expected to arrive. Authorities have established a medical camp in the village and deployed specialist doctors to monitor the patients. Officials continue to keep a close watch on their health. They have advised residents to remain calm while the investigation continues.
