Watermelon at Night Is It Dangerous

Watermelon often becomes the center of discussion during summer, especially when people question whether eating it late at night is actually safe for health.

A recent incident in Mumbai brought this topic into focus after four family members reportedly fell seriously ill following dinner and late-night watermelon consumption. They suffered from vomiting and loose motions within hours, and later died. Authorities are still waiting for medical and forensic reports to confirm the exact cause. Although doctors have not confirmed watermelon as the reason, the case has raised fresh concerns about late-night fruit consumption.

Watermelon remains one of the most popular summer fruits because it provides hydration, natural sweetness, and important nutrients. However, experts believe that the timing of eating it also plays an important role in digestion and overall comfort.

Watermelon Experts Explain Why Timing Matters

Nutrition expert Dr. Shilpa Arora says watermelon contains nearly 94 percent water along with potassium, lycopene, fiber, and several nutrients that support digestion and body hydration. She explains that the fruit works best when people consume it during the daytime instead of late at night.

According to her, digestion stays stronger and more active during afternoon hours, especially between 12 pm and 1 pm. She advises avoiding watermelon after 7 pm because the body slows down digestion in the evening, and the fruit’s slightly acidic nature may cause discomfort.

Similarly, Ayurveda expert Dr. Dhanvantri Tyagi also recommends caution. He explains that watermelon contains high water content and natural sugars, which may create bloating, heaviness, or stomach uneasiness when people eat it close to bedtime.

Who Should Avoid Late-Night Watermelon

Experts say some people need extra care while eating watermelon at night. This includes people with weak digestion, acidity problems, irritable bowel syndrome, bloating issues, and diabetics who must control sugar intake carefully.

In addition, people who eat watermelon immediately after a heavy dinner may feel discomfort because the digestive system already works harder at night. Since watermelon contains a large amount of water, eating too much before sleep may also lead to frequent bathroom visits and disturbed sleep.

Still, watermelon itself is not harmful when stored properly and eaten fresh. In fact, it remains one of the healthiest seasonal fruits during summer. The better choice is to enjoy watermelon as a daytime snack or between meals rather than turning it into a late-night habit.
