‘Chalta Hai’ Attitude Won’t Be Tolerated: Maharashtra FDA Chief Tukaram Mundhe Warns Food Businesses

Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has launched an aggressive campaign against food safety violations across the state. Within roughly a month of taking charge, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration conducted 904 raids at food establishments and took action against businesses that failed to meet safety and hygiene standards. The FDA also suspended several licences, including those of some well-known restaurants. Mundhe has built a reputation for his strict approach and has made it clear that food businesses cannot ignore safety regulations. His campaign focuses on protecting consumers and ensuring that establishments follow the standards prescribed by the authorities.

‘Chalta Hai’ Approach Has No Place in Food Safety

Speaking to NDTV, Mundhe said food businesses cannot adopt a “chalta hai” attitude when people’s health remains at stake. He stressed that even a small compromise with food safety can put consumers at risk. Mundhe said his primary responsibility as the state food safety commissioner involves ensuring that every person who consumes food receives safe and standard-quality products. He added that public health remains his top priority and that his office will continue taking action against businesses that compromise with safety norms. His message remains straightforward: businesses must follow the rules, and the FDA will not overlook violations.

Mundhe also highlighted his responsibility as the state drug commissioner and said the FDA must protect people from unsafe medicines. He explained that consumers deserve medicines that meet prescribed quality standards rather than spurious or substandard products. According to Mundhe, regulators must enforce the existing rules, while businesses holding licences must follow those rules. He said the FDA will continue performing its regulatory duties without compromising on public safety. His statement underlines the broader role of the department in protecting consumers from both unsafe food and poor-quality medicines.

Mundhe Warns Against Substandard Food and Medicines

Mundhe’s strict enforcement drive has earned him praise from people across Maharashtra, with many describing him as a “real-life Singham.” Last week, people in Pune gave him a standing ovation after he led a major crackdown on food establishments. The operation targeted hygiene violations and resulted in action against nearly 100 establishments. The response has strengthened Mundhe’s image as an officer who takes food safety seriously and refuses to give businesses an easy pass when they violate regulations.

The Maharashtra government has also stepped up its efforts to protect consumers from unsafe food products. The state has banned the production, distribution and sale of fake “analogue” paneer for one year. The move aims to prevent businesses from selling products that imitate paneer while failing to meet the required food safety standards. The FDA continues to monitor food establishments and can take action when inspectors find violations. The crackdown reflects the state’s broader push to improve food quality and protect consumers from potentially unsafe products.
