Vijay orders revamp of Amma Canteens amid food quality concerns

Vijay has directed officials to renovate and modernise Amma Unavagams across Tamil Nadu after receiving complaints about the quality and taste of food served at the subsidised canteens. The state currently operates 383 Amma Canteens under the Greater Chennai Corporation, while another 237 function under municipal corporations and municipalities in different districts. The government launched the initiative to improve infrastructure and maintain the welfare scheme’s reputation among the public.

According to an official statement from the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Office, Vijay reviewed the functioning of the canteens and identified the urgent need for repairs and upgrades in several centres. He instructed the Municipal Administration Department to immediately begin renovation work and strengthen operational standards across all Amma canteens. Officials will replace damaged utensils, install modern kitchen equipment and improve cooking facilities to ensure safer and more efficient food preparation.

The government has also asked local authorities to assess the immediate requirements of every canteen and prioritise procurement and repair work. Officials will closely monitor food quality, hygiene and maintenance standards to ensure people receive clean and nutritious meals. Vijay further directed local bodies to conduct regular inspections of kitchens and dining areas and respond quickly to public complaints regarding food or cleanliness.

The Amma canteen network continues to serve thousands of daily wage workers, urban labourers and economically weaker residents across Tamil Nadu by offering affordable meals. The latest move reflects the government’s focus on strengthening public welfare services. Earlier, Vijay had also ordered the closure of 717 TASMAC liquor outlets located near temples, schools, colleges and bus stands after conducting a statewide survey, citing concerns related to public welfare and social safety.
