Russia Extends Western Food Import Ban for Another Two Years

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree extending the embargo on agricultural products from Western countries. For an additional two years, according to local media reports. The embargo, which will now continue from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2026. Marks a significant change as this is the first time the extension has been set. For more than one year, Xinhua news agency reported.

The agricultural ban was originally introduced in August 2014. In response to Western sanctions imposed on Russia over its involvement in the Ukraine crisis. The sanctions primarily targeted key sectors of the Russian economy. Prompting Moscow to retaliate by restricting the import of agricultural products from countries such as the United States, the European Union, Australia, Norway, and Canada. Over time, these restrictions were expanded to include other European nations, including Ukraine.
