Mumbai Street Food Gets a Hygiene Makeover, Viral Video Highlights Major Changes

Mumbai’s street food scene appears to be witnessing a major transformation. A content creator recently shared a video showing visible improvements in food hygiene across the city. The changes have reportedly followed strict action by Maharashtra Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. The 51-year-old officer has received public appreciation for his crackdown on poor hygiene. His actions have included suspending food permits at several major outlets and closing unlicensed food businesses.

From Newspapers to Cleaner Food Wrapping

One major change highlighted in the video is the way vendors now wrap food. Street sellers have reportedly stopped using newspapers for items like Vada Pav. Instead, many are using clean butter paper to serve customers. Newspaper ink was earlier considered a possible source of harmful substances coming into contact with food. Additionally, restaurants and food stalls appear to be reducing the use of artificial colours. Manchurian, chutneys and other items are increasingly being served in their natural colours.

Another noticeable improvement is the use of gloves and hairnets by food workers. The video also showed vendors paying greater attention to cleanliness while preparing food. Cooking plates, pans and other utensils were reportedly being cleaned more carefully. The creator even conducted a tissue wipe test on a plate. The test showed no visible dust or dirt on the surface.

Customers Also Seeing Better Food Information

The changes are not limited to hygiene practices. Local food products such as bread and toast are also reportedly carrying clearer information. Restaurant ketchup bottles are increasingly displaying details such as MRP, ingredients and expiry dates. These changes could help customers make more informed choices about the food they purchase. The creator captioned the viral video with the word “Badlav”, meaning “change”.

The video has received an enormous response on social media. It has crossed 35.5 million views and received nearly two million likes. Thousands of users also commented on the post. Many praised the officer for taking action and creating visible improvements. Some users said that even a small number of officials doing their duties properly could bring significant changes. Others expressed hope that similar efforts would continue across different government departments.
