Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology in Srinagar achieved a major scientific breakthrough by cultivating rare edible mushrooms under controlled conditions. Researchers successfully grew morels, a highly valued mushroom variety. This marks the first time the institute has produced them in a controlled environment. The development represents a significant step in agricultural innovation.
Morels, scientifically known as Morchella, usually grow in high-altitude forest ecosystems. They appear only during a short rainy season, which limits their availability. Due to their rarity, they command high market prices. Their cultivation has traditionally depended on unpredictable natural conditions.

Scientists achieve milestone in growing rare mushrooms outside natural habitat
The university’s controlled cultivation method aims to reduce dependence on wild harvesting. Scientists developed techniques to replicate suitable growing conditions in a managed setup. This approach allows consistent production and better quality control. It also reduces pressure on natural ecosystems where these mushrooms grow.
Vice Chancellor Nazir Ahmad Ganai described the achievement as a transformative milestone. He said the innovation creates new opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs. He emphasized that the method supports sustainable agriculture practices. He also highlighted its role in conserving forest biodiversity.
The breakthrough opens new economic possibilities for rural communities and young entrepreneurs. Farmers can now explore high-value mushroom cultivation as a viable income source. The innovation may strengthen local economies and promote agri-based enterprises. It also sets the stage for further research and expansion in controlled mushroom farming.
