Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Tuesday said the Sunrise Festival in Anjaw district has huge potential for the region and the entire state. He noted that the event can play a key role in promoting tourism and cultural identity.
The Sunrise Festival at Dong is Arunachal Pradesh’s first-ever New Year celebration. It is built around the rare experience of witnessing India’s earliest sunrise. As a result, the festival has already drawn attention from travellers and nature lovers.
Khandu described the opening day as a “magical experience.” He said the state welcomed India’s first sunlight amid calm winds, green landscapes and pleasant weather. Meanwhile, he shared moments from the festival on social media platform X.
Emphasis on Sustainability and Community
According to the chief minister, the early hours at Dong reflected peace and spiritual energy. Yoga and meditation sessions added to the serene atmosphere. Moreover, he stressed that the festival follows the principle of “leave no trash, leave no trace.”
Khandu said the government aims to grow the festival over the next decade. However, he clarified that tourism growth will remain balanced with environmental protection and community participation. He added that this approach is essential for fragile border regions.
Dong lies near the meeting point of the Lohit River and the Himalayan foothills. Because of this, it is considered one of the most offbeat destinations in the country. The festival seeks to turn this natural event into a shared cultural experience.

Khandu, along with Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, formally inaugurated the five-day festival on Monday. He said the initiative aims to create sustainable livelihoods for local entrepreneurs. At the same time, it will promote responsible tourism and support small businesses.
The festival also highlights local culture through village walks, music, storytelling and art activities. Notably, visitors interacted with members of the indigenous Meyor tribe. An Indian Army display showcased modern equipment and technology, underlining security preparedness in the frontier region.
The festival will continue till January 2. Finally, it will conclude with the first sunrise of the New Year and a closing ceremony honouring local communities, volunteers and participants.
