Heavy rain struck Kolkata from midnight, flooding several areas and causing severe waterlogging across the city. Residents reported rainwater entering homes, forcing many families to take immediate safety precautions overnight. Flooded streets turned into flowing streams, disrupting traffic and daily life in southern and eastern Kolkata. Floodwaters electrocuted five people, tragically, just days before Durga Puja festivities were set to begin. The IMD recorded 247.5 mm of rainfall in Alipore between Monday and Tuesday morning. Areas like Garia Kamdahari, Kalighat, and Jodhpur Park received over 280 mm of rainfall within hours.

Torrential Rainfall Brings Kolkata to a Standstill
Civic authorities struggled to drain water quickly as overflowing drains failed during the heavy rainfall.The rain severely impacted neighborhoods like Topsia, Ballygunge, and Chetla, leaving streets completely submerged.Flooded roads forced people to wade through knee-deep water as vehicles broke down mid-journey.Drainage systems in low-lying areas failed, submerging many homes and shops for several hours.

Despite ongoing efforts, the city’s infrastructure struggled under the pressure of sudden, intense rainfall.
Flooded station yards in Howrah and Sealdah severely disrupted suburban and long-distance train operations.Authorities cancelled, delayed, or short-terminated several local trains due to waterlogged tracks and cabins.Chitpur yard and Sealdah South Division faced complete operational breakdown, stranding thousands of daily passengers.Officials rescheduled Howrah-Gaya and Howrah-Jamalpur Vande Bharat Express trains after heavy waterlogging on the tracks.

City Services Disrupted Ahead of Durga Puja Celebrations
Metro officials suspended services between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Rabindra Sarobar stations for safety reasons.Kolkata Metro continued partial operations between Dakshineswar and Maidan with regular updates and strict safety checks.Railway and Metro teams worked continuously to restore operations once water levels began receding across tracks.Airport officials managed to maintain normal operations by deploying pumps and preventing apron water accumulation.Kolkata airport authorities ensured smooth flight movements by addressing rainwater drainage issues immediately.The IMD reported a low-pressure system over northeast Bay of Bengal, causing widespread rainfall in Bengal.
