Rubio Raises Irregular Immigration in First Meeting with Jaishankar

During their first meeting in Washington DC today, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio brought up the issue of irregular immigration with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Rubio highlighted the Trump administration’s intent to collaborate with India to boost economic relations and address concerns regarding irregular migration.

US-India Discussions Focus on Strengthening Ties and Regional Cooperation

They covered a broad array of topics, such as regional matters and ways to strengthen the US-India relationship, particularly in areas like critical and emerging technologies, defense cooperation, energy, and promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Jaishankar, who is in Washington DC at the invitation of the US government to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Donald Trump as the 47th US president, expressed.

Jaishankar Reflects on Strong Bilateral Ties and Future Collaboration with Rubio

We had a thorough review of our extensive bilateral partnership, in which Rubio has been a strong and consistent advocate.

During the meeting we also exchanged views on a wide range of regional and global issues that are of mutual interest.

I look forward to closely collaborating with him to advance our strategic cooperation and further strengthen the ties between India and the United States.

Four-Nation Talks Pave the Way for Upcoming Leaders’ Summit in India

Earlier, Rubio engaged in discussions with Jaishankar, along with his Australian and Japanese counterparts, Penny Wong and Takeshi Iwaya.

Following these talks, the four countries issued a joint statement, announcing that officials would meet regularly in preparation for a leaders’ summit scheduled to take place in India, likely later this year.
