Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced on Thursday that President Vladimir Putin will be visiting India soon, marking a significant diplomatic milestone. Lavrov revealed that Putin had accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation to visit India, and preparations for the visit are already underway. However, the exact dates for Putin’s visit have not yet been disclosed. This will be the first time Putin travels to India since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, highlighting the importance of the visit amid the current geopolitical tensions.

Lavrov Confirms Putin’s Upcoming Visit to India, Highlights Strong Bilateral Ties
Lavrov provided this update during a video address at a conference organized by the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), titled “Russia and India: Towards a New Bilateral Agenda.” In his address, Lavrov confirmed that arrangements for Putin’s trip to in progress, and reiterated that the Russian president had accepted the invitation extended by the Indian government. He also referenced the close ties between Russia, emphasizing the long-standing strategic partnership between the two countries. Lavrov noted, After Prime Minister Modi’s re-election last year, his first foreign trip was to Russia. Now, it’s our turn.

Putin’s Visit Follows Modi’s Russia Trip, Boosting Ties
The announcement of Putin’s upcoming visit comes on the heels of Prime Minister Modi’s own visit to Russia in July 2024. This marked his first trip to Russia in five years, signaling the continuation of strong bilateral relations. Prior to this, Modi had last visited Russia in 2019 when he attended an economic conference in the Russian Far East city of Vladivostok. During that visit, Modi invited Putin to visit India. Putin’s upcoming visit to India will strengthen the partnership between the two nations.

On March 24, Lavrov also spoke about Russia’s growing international relations, particularly with China, India, Iran, North Korea, and members of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). He stressed that Russia is focusing on expanding its strategic ties with these nations, including its partnership with India. Lavrov explained, “The partnership between Russia and China has reached an unprecedented level of mutual trust, and we are also developing our privileged strategic partnership with India.
