Mumbai Civic Polls Announced for January 15
The State Election Commission last conducted the BMC elections in 2017, and no party secured a clear majority in the 227-member civic body. The undivided Shiv Sena won the largest number of seats, while the BJP closely followed, and Congress, NCP, and MNS also secured representation. The BJP later supported Shiv Sena to form the civic administration.
The tenure of BMC corporators ended in March 2022, and an administrator has run the civic body since then. In the upcoming polls, the BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena will contest together, while the Maha Vikas Aghadi will challenge them. Candidates will file nominations between December 23 and 30, and they may withdraw by January 2, 2026. Officials have capped campaign spending at ₹15 lakh, mandated caste validity certificates, and enforced the Model Code of Conduct.
