Maya Handa: The Mastermind Behind Zohran Mamdani’s Historic Mayoral Triumph

Maya Handa, a rising figure in progressive politics, played a pivotal role in Zohran Mamdani’s historic victory as New York City’s first South Asian and Muslim mayor. Appointed campaign manager in July, succeeding Elle Bisgaard-Church, Handa helped guide Mamdani’s team to a decisive win over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

Before joining Mamdani’s campaign, Handa managed State Senator Zellnor Myrie’s mayoral bid and had previously worked with Mamdani during his time in the State Assembly. Her experience includes collaborations with figures such as Jamaal Bowman and Elizabeth Warren, as well as advocacy work with the Working Families Party.

The 2025 election saw record voter turnout, with more than two million New Yorkers casting ballots — nearly double the previous election’s participation. Mamdani’s campaign flipped key neighborhoods and built strong support among working-class and immigrant communities.

Under Handa’s leadership, the campaign’s message of rent freezes, affordable childcare, and economic justice resonated citywide. Her strategic direction and grassroots approach transformed Mamdani’s candidacy into a powerful movement for equity, inclusion, and progressive change across New York City.
