Historic Cabinet Expansion in Tamil Nadu

C Joseph Vijay expanded his government nearly two weeks after taking office, inducting 23 new ministers into the Cabinet on Thursday. The move significantly increased the strength of the council of ministers and marked the first major reshuffle of the new administration. Political observers viewed the expansion as an effort to strengthen governance and broaden representation across the state.

Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new ministers during a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan. Several senior legislators were among the first to take oath and formally join the cabinet. Leaders from the ruling alliance and other dignitaries attended the event. The ceremony proceeded smoothly under official protocol.

Congress Returns to Tamil Nadu Cabinet After Nearly Six Decades

The expansion brought 21 legislators from Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam into the ministry, along with two members of Congress. The inclusion of Congress legislators marked a significant political development, as the party secured representation in the Tamil Nadu cabinet after several decades. Analysts believe the decision could strengthen coordination within the ruling alliance.

Chief Minister Vijay and nine other ministers had previously taken oath on May 10. By adding new faces to the cabinet, the government sought to improve regional representation and distribute administrative responsibilities more effectively. Party leaders considered experience, organizational contribution and local representation while selecting ministers. The expanded cabinet is expected to play a larger role in implementing government programmes.

Following the cabinet expansion, the government is expected to focus on development initiatives and public welfare measures across Tamil Nadu. Newly inducted ministers will soon assume charge of their respective departments and begin policy implementation. Political experts describe the expansion as part of the government’s long-term administrative strategy. More key policy announcements are anticipated in the coming months.
