Gujarat civic polls: BJP set for big win in 15 corporations

The Bharatiya Janata Party delivered a dominant performance in the Gujarat local body elections and moved towards a massive victory across all 15 municipal corporations. The party secured majorities in several civic bodies and maintained strong leads in the remaining ones. Congress stayed far behind in most areas, while other parties failed to make a major impact. The results once again highlighted BJP’s continued dominance in Gujarat’s urban politics.

Gujarat held voting on April 26 as part of a large democratic exercise across the state. Voters cast ballots for 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats. Political observers described it as one of the biggest grassroots elections in the state’s history. The polls tested political strength in both urban and rural regions.

This time, elections took place in 15 municipal corporations, including 6 established civic bodies and 9 newly formed ones. The older corporations included Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, and Jamnagar. The state government created the 9 new corporations in 2025 to manage rapid urbanisation and improve governance. These included Mehsana, Morbi, Nadiad, Vapi, Anand-Karamsad, Navsari, Gandhidham, Porbandar-Chhaya, and Surendranagar-Wadhwan.

BJP Sweeps Newly Formed Municipal Corporations

BJP also dominated the newly created corporations. The party won Mehsana, Morbi, Nadiad, and Vapi, where elections took place for the first time. In Morbi, BJP swept all 52 seats. In Nadiad, the party captured 51 out of 52 seats, while it won 50 seats in Navsari. These victories showed BJP’s growing support in emerging urban centres.

The party maintained its edge in the older corporations as well. In Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, BJP led on 95 out of 192 seats, while Congress managed only 9. The party also maintained a strong advantage in Surat, leading on 71 of 120 seats. In Rajkot, BJP moved ahead on 40 of 72 seats, while in Vadodara it secured a lead on 32 of 76 seats. BJP also stayed ahead in Bhavnagar and Jamnagar, keeping rivals far behind.

Overall, the election results once again confirmed BJP’s political strength in Gujarat. The party performed strongly in both new and old civic bodies and left Congress without representation in several places. Trends clearly indicated that BJP was heading for a clean sweep across all 15 municipal corporations. Political analysts viewed the outcome as a major boost for the party ahead of future elections.
