People across Kolkata are discussing politics in noticeably quieter tones ahead of the 2026 Bengal elections. Unlike earlier campaigns filled with loud and confident opinions, many residents now speak cautiously. Conversations often pause midway, with individuals choosing not to openly reveal their political views. This shift reflects a growing sense of uncertainty among voters.
At Dacre’s Lane near Esplanade, daily life continues as usual with crowded food stalls and busy office-goers. People gather over meals, tea, and cigarettes, but political discussions feel more restrained. Even as election dates approach, the intensity of debate appears subdued. The environment suggests attentiveness, but not open expression.

Bardesh Paswan, a worker at a popular food stall, said people prefer to keep their opinions private. He noted that individuals understand their own thoughts but avoid sharing them publicly. According to him, people seek stability and a better quality of life regardless of income levels. His remarks highlight a broader hesitation among voters to speak openly.
Meanwhile, some individuals continue to express clear political preferences. Saurabh Pandit voiced support for Mamata Banerjee and emphasized governance over religious politics. He pointed to administrative issues such as long queues and planning gaps in electoral processes. He also stressed the importance of personal freedom in lifestyle and food choices.
Another resident, Anutapo Sanyal, reflected the prevailing uncertainty about the election outcome. He said it remains difficult to predict whether the current government will retain power. Many people continue to observe developments closely without forming firm conclusions. This cautious outlook defines Kolkata’s political atmosphere ahead of the polls.
