Election Commission to Announce Assembly Schedule Today

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to announce the schedule for assembly elections at 3 PM on Friday, August 16. A media invitation from the Election Commission for a press conference at New Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan around 3 PM did not specify the states for which the Poll schedule would be disclosed.

Election Timelines for Haryana, Maharashtra, and Jammu & Kashmir

The legislative assemblies of Haryana and Maharashtra are set to end their terms on November 3 and November 26, respectively. Additionally, the election panel aims to conduct assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir before the Supreme Court’s deadline of September 30. The Election Commission has recently visited Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana to assess Poll preparations but has not yet traveled to Maharashtra.

Jharkhand Assembly Elections and Jammu & Kashmir Election Outlook

Assembly elections are also pending in Jharkhand, with the term of its legislative assembly set to end in January 2025. Additionally, the Election Commission is expected to announce the schedule for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. If this occurs, it will mark the first assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir since 2014, following a decade-long gap.

Recent Developments and Election Commission’s Commitment

In 2019, the Narendra Modi government abrogated Article 370 and reorganized Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Despite this, assembly elections have been delayed due to various factors, including a delimitation exercise completed in 2022. Recently, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and a delegation reviewed Poll preparations in Jammu and Kashmir. Kumar assured that the commission is dedicated to conducting elections as soon as possible. Stating that internal or external forces will not hinder the process.
